Linda Kaun’s life long passion for textiles combined with her persuasive writing skills, positions her as a uniquely qualified copywriter for the textile industry.
At 7, I started stitching up doll clothes. A neighbor taught me embroidery when I was 9. And after learning the basics of machine sewing, in the 8th grade I sewed an entire wardrobe for my little sister’s doll, complete with rick-rack trim and tiny set-in sleeves. I then used those same skills to create my own clothes for many years.
As I was completing my Master of Social Work degree in 1975, I discovered the amazing properties of melted wax brushed onto cloth then dyed, in an ancient process called batik. My life shifted dramatically. After two years as a social worker, I struck out on my own as a self-taught batik artist.
Over the years this love of fabrics, dyeing, painting and printing translated into a 30-year career as an artist, teacher and craftswoman. I’ve run a self-supporting batik clothing business, marketed and sold my art along with Indonesian handicrafts, introduced many students to batik and other textile design processes by teaching in college and in workshops internationally, and am widely known within the international batik community.
After writing for textile and travel magazines, I realized I was ready for a new challenge. I decided to develop my writing talents further. That’s when I discovered the American Artist’s and Writer’s Institute (AWAI).
Taught by master copywriters Michael Masterson, Don Mahoney, Paul Hollingshead, assisted by Bob Bly, the Accelerated Copywriting Course gave a firm grounding in direct response copywriting. After completing the foundation course, I enrolled in the 2-year AWAI Master's Program. I love reading marketing, copywriting, and textile industry blogs, articles and books to stay current.
Copywriting is a deep study of people – what motivates and inspires them. Helping businesses use new social media tools is a natural progression for me: from my academic training in sociology and social work; the people-oriented visual stories of my batik paintings; to honing my keen verbal skills in direct marketing.
I find the textile industry to be the perfect niche market to fully utilize my life skills and experience.
I live with my teenage foster daughter and two orange tabby cats in the city of Jogjakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia for most of the year – traveling home to Los Angeles each year as well. When I’m not buried in my computer, you might find me curled up with a good mystery book, going to the movies or heading off to the vibrant green countryside on my motorbike.
